C___?-Cola

In order for something that happened in a country such as Bolivia to make the news here in NZ or Australia it needs to be bad news, such as a natural disaster, a massacre or something along those lines. However; since Bolivia's new government, the country is much more often in the news and they don't necessarily need to be bad or good, nowadays even the funny ones are making a headline.

I don't mean to say that the fact that Coca-Cola Co. imports 100 tons of coca leaf annually from Bolivia through a company called Stepan is funny; or that the US government is trying to make the exports of the coca leaf illegal to everyone else apart from Coca-Cola Co is good news.

The funny thing that has recently made it into the international scope is what has been sent to the assembly writing Bolivia's new constitution; requesting Coca-Cola Co to drop the Coca from the brand name, because coca "belongs to the cultural heritage of this Andean nation" . This doesn't mean that the audacity of the Bolivians requesting that a company founded in the late 1800's, with the most recognised brand name throughout the world is funny. What I find particularly ironic is that a company of such magnitudes as Coca-Cola denies any purchases of coca leaf but admits using a syrup extracted from coca leaf to make the drink.

So who owns the word Coca?
Latin Americans who have been using it for a millennian?
Or the 19th century Corporation?

Julinho! The demand against Coca-Cola is absurd, from my point of view.
1st 'cause the Constituent Assembly should be looking at other things. It's been nearly 8 months and nothing has been achieved so far... do we really want this to happen or is this a hoax?
2nd... what difference would it make if Coca-Cola's name were to be changed? Would there be less poverty? Would there be more work? Would coca leaf be legalised? What do they expect to happen?
3rd The demand is in itself absurd. It would be the same if those whose last name is Bolivar asked the Bolivian football club to change its name because it is disrespectful of the liberator's name... how dumb can one be?
Sorry Took me so long to reply, I had no internet for the past couple of days.

I agree with you Ronaldo, it is definitely a joke what they suggested, they failed to foresee how much time and money a battle like this would take and with not much certainty of what results it could bring for the coca growers. Yes, I also agree that the assembly should be worrying about things more relevant than that, because by the way things are going I don`t think they will finish writing our constitution.

But Ronaldo, I think we all ought to give them some credit, because by doing what they did they made people think of the origins of the word coca in Coca-Cola, they also made people outside Bolivia reconsider the relevance of coca leaf in people`s life. If Coca-Cola has been using it for over a hundred years, if millions of people outside Bolivia had consumed coca leaf indirectly through Coca-Cola, why keep it illegal?

You could be right this may not help in the legalisation of coca leaf, but at least it made people think that coca leaf is not only used to make cocaine.
