The Behaviour of a Coward

I have many regrets, but some of these regrets from time to time come to haunt me. Breathing becomes difficult because they make a knot in my heart. This, is one of these moments; I went to a Marist catholic School in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. One day, one of the brightest students in my class was asked a direct question by our maths teacher, a Marist brother and principal of the school: ─Do you believe in God? ─No Right there and then, in front of everyone, the principal said that he will expel him from school if he does not change his answer. I am the sort of person that thinks things are real, even if they only exist in our minds and that we all have a different perception of reality. For example, yesterday, I had tea with three of my classmates, although we spent the afternoon together all there is left from this experience is in our minds or more so, in our memories. And the memory of yesterday's event is different for all of us. Just imagine that person A noticed that...

Culturally and Racially Insensitive

Imagem
The November 10th edition of the Bolivian newspaper El Deber, published an article on how 36.6% of Japanese couples did not have sex throughout 2008. I am not discrediting the newspaper's sources and by no means I am disputing the facts presented in the article. What has astounded me, however, is the picture the newspaper used to illustrate the piece. It is a picture taken from a Korean drama called Winter Sonata, in other words, the newspaper used Korean people to illustrate a Japanese problem. Great isn't it? I am sure this was an honest mistake and there was no malice from the journalist and the editor who decided to publish the picture. But this illustrates two things. One that the Bolivian newspaper has no regard for copyright laws (this is a very famous picture and is heavily protected). But this issue is besides the point. What I am concerned about is the issue of cultural and racial insensitivity. For those who do not know, Bolivia has very serious problems with racism...

Reason for the Secrecy of Torture

A couple of nights ago I pondered for quite a long time over a seemingly simple question. Why does institutionalised torture in democratic countries needs to be a secret? In a democratic nation every one is innocent until proven guilty, therefore the persecuted must be treated as innocent until his judgement day. Which leads to my second point, every person has the right to a fair trial and a defence. I understand often the military or the police need to incarcerate and persecuted people based on rumours and misrepresented facts. I think this is a fact of life that we will never be able to avoid. Consider yourself lucky, perhaps even extremely lucky if you have never been wrongfully imprisoned and/or persecuted. Hence what I am saying, at times we cannot avoid to be wrongfully imprisoned or persecuted, mistakes of this nature are bound to happen and cannot be avoided. But while the accused awaits his fair trial he needs to be treated in the most humane way possible. The excuse of the t...

EQUUS

Imagem
Equus is a complex and instigating play, written by the English playwriter Peter Shaffer more than 30 years ago. The story is focused on the relationship of Alan Strang, a 17 year old boy admitted into a psychiatric ward of a hospital after, apparently without reason, blinding six horses; his doctor, Martin Dysart, a middle aged man struggling to keep his interest on his once loved job and his long gone marriage receives the incumbency of treating the boy. The play offers a range of discussions, focusing on the alienation of a repressed family, on one side obsessed by religion, in the figure of the mother, on the other by hypocrisy and fear (the father). Definitely a timeless piece that continues to fascinate audiences around the world and now it's brought to New Zealand through the Peach Theatre Company, directed and produced by Jesse Peach. Jesse said he's putting plays on West Auckland to create more opportunities to people living in the area, "and the only way to do i...

Infernal Affairs

The Departed e a versão de Hollywood do filme Infernal Affairs .
